Have you ever been on a hike where you can see the sea the whole way?
That is why our Gunung Arong trips keep filling up. Located in Mersing, Johor, the hike climbs about 300m over a 7km round trip and takes about 4 hours at a comfortable pace. One trail packs in a beach walk, a river crossing, jungle paths and a summit sea view. Wherever you are coming from, this one is worth it.
After meeting at Teluk Gorek Chalet & Campsite in the morning, we start with a stretch along the beach, sand under your feet and the sea right beside you. Most hikers are already smiling before we even reach the jungle. We then pass the river mouth and enter the original jungle trail (the guide will confirm the tide arrangements in advance, see the FAQ below).
What is the trail like
Honestly, this trail is very kind to beginners. The jungle section is shaded, the slopes are manageable, and only a short stretch near the summit needs both hands and feet. Take it slow and you will be fine. Our past groups have included office workers on their first hike and families with kids, and everyone made it to the top.
Some sections can get slippery, especially after rain, so shoes with good grip matter. A licensed Forestry Department guide accompanies the group the entire way. Follow the guide’s pace, rest when you need to, and there is no rush at all.
The summit view is worth every drop of sweat
The moment you reach the top, a full panorama of the sea opens up in front of you. From the summit tower and the rocks, Love Bay sits right below, the Mersing coastline stretches into the distance and the islands are all in view. On a good day the water is that clear blue green that needs no filter.
Many hikers tell us they never expected views like this in Johor. No flights needed, and a day trip is just right.
The day does not end at the bottom
After the descent, many hikers head over to Pulau Mawar to see the famous sky gate and sky window. Then it is off to Air Papan beach for a walk, some sea breeze and a seafood meal. Mountain, river and sea, all in a single day, and the timing works out just right.
